Taking an active holiday

Being active is a significant part of my life and is very much part of who I am. So when I go on holiday it normally involves some activity. August saw me joining up with other keen cyclists on the G-Whizz Inclusive Tandem Bike Rides annual outing to Pontins Pakefield holiday camp in Suffolk. This year was a good gathering of 6 tandem crews for 3 days of cycling.

The first day's ride was heading south towards Southwold for the first cafe stop. The fairly flat countryside made for an easy ride. After Southwold those wanting a shorter ride headed back and those, including myself, who wanted a longer ride continued on to the lunch stop at Two Magpies Bakery in Darsham. After lunch it was a ride back to Pakefield to complete the 50 miles ride.

To add some variation on the second day the pairings of people on each tandem was changed. So after a little time adjusting the bikes to the new pairings it was time to start the next ride heading north towards Reedham. This time there was only a single stop planned for lunch in Reedham, those wanting a shorter ride branched off before lunch. Those doing the longer ride took the ferry across the river in Reedham and stopped to have lunch by the river.

Unfortunately on the third day the weather had taken a change for the worse and after a little discussion it was decided that it was not suitable for cycling with the strong winds. This though did not stop me from being active, so I joined others from the group in taking to the pool at Pakefield in the morning. After lunch as it was not going to be possible to get any more cycling in, we decided to cut the holiday short and make an early return home.

Although this type of holiday involves a lot of activity and little relaxing, I find it a very enjoyable way to spend my time when wanting a few days break and can make me feel refreshed when I return home. I would like to thank Graham for arranging this week and the other riders for the pleasant company on the rides and I look forward to the next group cycling break with G-Whizz.
