Leicester Sharks qualify for national semi-final

Leicester Sharks Swimming Club will battle it out for national glory following their East and West Midlands league victory.

The 9-12 year old squad rounded off their league campaign impressively, sweeping aside their closest rivals Northampton by a 20-point margin. They will now travel to Somerset on 2nd October, where they will meet the five top placed teams from around the country.

Their progression in the Arena Junior Inter-League competition has seen them reach the final few, in a competition that sees over 200 teams from across England and Wales take part. The league, which encourages teams to take part in inter-club competitions, could see the next Team GB stars of the future follow in the footsteps of Adam Peaty and co.

Judy Leader, Chair of Leicester Sharks said, "It's the first time we have ever won the Nuneaton & District league, which is just fantastic. Last year we finished in second place behind Northampton and made it through to the Northern regional final. This year we've gone a step better, which shows that as a Club, we are absolutely heading in the right direction.

"We also fielded a B team on Saturday in the Division 2 regional final. That team earned a well-deserved promotion to division one next season, joining the A Team.

"Our club is growing in membership and we hope this will continue in the aftermath of the Rio Olympics. We have recently taken on two additional coaches to complement our squad structure and we are continuing to develop links with local schools to raise interest and awareness in our club and the sport in general."

Leicester Sharks was formed in 2011 and offers swimming for children of all ages, from four in the 'Learn to Swim' programmes right up to senior level, with numerous opportunities for swimmers of all standards to swim competitively.

Training takes place at Enderby, Lutterworth and New Parks Leisure Centres as well as Leicester Grammar School in Great Glen, and there are sessions on most days.
