GO GOLD Athlete of the Week: Connor Harris

Connor's drive and determination has earned him recognition with GO GOLD and proves one day he has what it takes to be shooting with Olympic or England shooters. We tune into his bio to discover how he looks to make this possible:

Describe your typical day (including training, school, etc.). I typically shoot once or twice a week. The first shoot of the week is after college on Tuesday. I'm currently do a level 2 carpentry course at Leicester College. I finish at about 4pm so that gives me plenty of time to get back and have a couple rounds of clays (25 in each round). The 2nd time I shoot in the week is on a Saturday morning at my local shooting ground, Normanton Shooting ground in Thurlaston. I will shoot 100 clays (minimum number of clays on a registered shoot) and see if the score will make the grade for the England selection shoots.

What is/was your favourite subject at school? My favourite lesson at school was PE. I enjoyed PE because I love doing sport and that is exactly what PE is about.

What has been your biggest challenge? My biggest yet was shooting for England in Scotland this year. I was the youngest shooter in the team and it was also my first time representing my country, so I was very nervous but I managed to pull through and shoot very well. I also ended up in a shoot off for a bronze medal at the European Championships - it was very nerve wracking but I won, which made it special.

What's the best thing that your sport has enabled you to do? The best thing that my sport has enabled me to do is meet new people and make new friends. Unlike most sports, shooting offers a very competitive side but at the same you can have a laugh, even at the top level. You shoot alongside people of all ages and abilities - one day I could be shooting with Olympic or England shooters - the next week I could be alongside a novice.

What is your proudest accomplishment (doesn't have to be sport related)? My proudest moment is definitely making the U21 England team at the age of 16. I went into the selection shoots thinking I wouldn't make it because of my age and I surprised myself (and a lot of other older shooters) by making the team.

How would your friends describe you? My friends would probably describe me as quite a funny person but also a very competitive person as well.
