Over 850 of Leicestershire, Leicester and Rutland's most talented young athletes and disabled athletes will take centre stage at the Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games Spring Championships on Wednesday 21st March at Loughborough University.
The secondary aged athletes, representing over 45 schools, will be representing the 10 School Sport & Physical Activity Networks (SSPANs), in 13 competitions across 7 sports.
The action-packed event will see the athletes show off their sporting talent and go head-to-head against the other Partnerships, all of which have qualified from Level 2 area finals, to participate in this Level 3 County Final Championships.
Ian Stringer, BBC Radio Leicester Reporter/Commentator will welcome and motivate the teams at the start of the day, alongside them watching a performance from the Rutland Youth Dance Academy. Teams will then head off for four hours of competitive action in:
- Sitting Volleyball – Key Stage 3/4/5 Mixed
- Learning Disability Basketball – Key Stage 4 Mixed
- Boccia – Key Stage 4 MLD (Moderate Learning Disability) & SLD (Severe Learning Disability) Mixed
- Dodgeball – Key Stage 4 Boys
- Indoor Rowing – Year 9 and Year 11 Mixed
- Sportshall Athletics – Year 7 and Year 8 Boys & Girls
- Volleyball – Key Stage 4 Boys & Girls
Award ceremonies will take place at each of the competition sites, as the Winners, 2nd and 3rd place will be announced. A 'Spirit of the Games' winner will also be announced, for the Team best representing the School Games values of Determination, Honesty, Passion, Respect, Self-Belief and Teamwork.
School Games action doesn't stop there for Loughborough. The University will again host the National School Games from 30th August – 2nd September 2018, where the country's most talented young athletes compete.
The Leicester-Shire & Rutland School Games, now in its seventh year, is part of the national 'School Games Programme'. It aims to keep competitive sport at the heart of schools and provide more young people with the opportunity to compete and achieve their personal best.
