Steady Steps+ was developed as an exit route for those who completed the Steady Steps programme, or as a weekly session for anyone aged over 65 to develop their stability, mobility, balance and coordination. It is largely a chair based exercise session involving standing progressions, as well as the use of resistance bands.
The programme has received a lot of fantastic feedback from participants, many of whom have been attending from week 1 and have made a huge difference in their own strength and mobility. The sessions focus on movements that are used in everyday life and are therefore crucial in allowing older people to remain independent for as long as possible. 'Sit-to-stand' helps
maintain the ability to get in and out of a chair without the use of the arms or other support aids. Overhead stretches and shoulder exercises ensure that people are able to safely retrieve items from high cupboards. Marches, lunges and resistance band exercises have helped improve the fitness of attendees to undertake daily activity, such as walk to the shops or climb stairs.
Steady Steps+ frequently takes referrals from local GPs and physiotherapists who have commented on the positive feedback they have received from their patients about the sessions.
"I enjoy the class so much and I can tell the difference from when I started. I suffer from arthritis in both knees, but this class has allowed me to regain strength. I can even stand up from the sofa without using my hands."
