Tarell Atkinson, a talented young boxer from Hinckley, has been supported through the Active Together Young People Physical Activity & Sport Hardship Fund. The fund is aimed at helping young people overcome financial constraints affecting their continued involvement in physical activity and sport as a participant, official, coach, volunteer or talented sportsperson.
The funding has supported Tarell in a number of ways – he was able to attend a Boxing Training Camp & Competition in Tenerife, he has competed at the Ed Bilbey Box Cup in Grantham and he will also be competing at the Riviera Box Cup in Torbay in the Summer.
Tarell achieved great success in Tenerife where he came away victorious in the Las Americas Boxing Championship. This was his first time abroad as well as his first time away from his family, so it was a fantastic opportunity and experience for him and one that he fully embraced and learnt a lot from. He was exposed to a different perspective of the boxing experience compared to the UK amateur level competitions that he is used to participating in.
At the Ed Bilbey Box Cup, Tarell made it through to the finals where he came away with a Silver medal; another great result for the young boxer. He is now eager to focus on his training, fitness and healthy eating, working towards his next goal of competing in the Riviera Box Cup in August. He is hopeful to come back from the competition with a win and we wish Tarell all the best!
Tarell said "The funding has allowed me to have great opportunities by visiting a different country, as well as experiencing how they train and participating in competition out there."
Tarell's mum Shena said "We are very grateful for the funding that was awarded to Tarell which helped with payment towards travel and accommodation, without it he would most likely not be able to participate in such competitions, as well as gain experiences and make unforgettable memories."
