Reema's Story - South Asian Heritage Month 2024

As part of our South Asian Heritage Month 2024 series, Reema discusses how her health, well being and career choices have been shaped by her South Asian heritage. Read on to see how Bhangra Dance has had an impacted on all areas of Reema's life.

Five years ago, I was stressed, tired, and overwhelmed by the demands of being a mum to five wonderful children. I was losing touch with my own identity, my energy depleted, and my passion for life dwindling. It was just before COVID that I made a life-changing decision. Having felt this loss I wanted to rekindle something that made me feel like me and that was my love for dance, specifically Bhangra dance, reconnecting with my cultural roots. Embracing this passion wasn't just about physical activity; it was about finding my own space, my own energy, my own joy. It became a journey of rediscovery and rejuvenation, allowing me to fill my cup so I could pour into others.Bhangra fitness transformed my life in ways I never imagined. It invigorated my mental and physical health, making me feel young and vibrant again. The rhythm, the movement, and the sheer joy of dance became my therapy, my sanctuary. It was no longer just a hobby; it was a lifeline. I never knew how much I missed it until I started doing it again and realised this was a very big part of my life that I just forgot about.

Sharing this magic with others has been an extraordinary experience. Watching people find joy, happiness, and a sense of achievement through Bhangra is profoundly fulfilling. It's more than just exercise; it's a celebration of life, a reason to stay active, and a pathway to falling in love with fitness. Igniting this fire in others, especially women like me, has been my greatest reward.

Breaking down the stigma that Bhangra is merely entertainment back in the 80's and 90's, I've shown that it's also a powerful way to stay fit, healthy, and happy. In the past five years, I've received two prestigious fitness awards and been a UK finalist for the Bhangra Fitness Award for two consecutive years. Additionally, I have had the chance connected with many Bhangra influences who share this passion.
