Black History Month 2024 - Khaleem

Black History Months theme for 2024 is "Reclaiming Narratives".

This theme will shine a brighter light on stories, allegories, and histories that underscore the commitment to correcting historical inaccuracies and showcasing the untold success stories and the full complexity of Black heritage. Black History Month 2024 has the following focuses:

Honour Our Heroes: Challenge the narratives that have often overlooked the contributions and achievements of Black individuals both in the UK and globally.

Embrace Our Stories: Take control of our stories, honour our heroes, and shine a light on the diverse and profound impact of Black individuals across various fields.

Empower and Educate: Join us in embracing, educating, and empowering one another through the stories that shape our collective identity.

Active Together are honoured to embrace the stories of organisations and individuals who represent our Black communities across the local area. This week the spotlight falls on Khaleem and how sport supported him as a child and now impacts on the amazing work he does in the community:

"Sport helped shape the man I am today. From the young age of 6, I started playing basketball for the Leicester Warriors, where not only did I go through years of training developing as an athlete, but my skills as a communicator and a leader, which I didn't realise would help me in the career I do now as well. I spent my teenage years struggling, trying to figure out who I was to be as a "young black man" in Leicester, and with the absence of a father figure, I felt this journey would be 10 times harder because all I had were the memories, or stories of a man who was already established as a man, to help guide me.

From an early age I have seen, and personally experienced, the struggle within expressing emotion within the BAME community, I am a man in tune with his emotional, being very sensitive as a child and forming into a man that has grown into, and developing, strong emotional intelligence. My aim now is to help provide emotional and relationship advice to help with emotional and mental health, whilst also sharing my personal story within schools and communities up and down the country."
